Customer Bathroom: Master Bedroom Ensuite

There's nothing more exciting to us than receiving images of clients' bathroom transformations - especially one as daring as an open-plan master bathroom.

Our Surrey bathroom store recently helped a couple to create their dream bathroom - and they generously let us share it, to help us inspire you with your own master bedroom ensuite ideas.

Many people may gasp at the idea of having an open-plan ensuite, and wonder where they would get their privacy. After all, there are some things which are better not shared. But for homeowners who have plenty of bathrooms to escape to, an exposed bathroom could be the perfect solution.

For those who are looking for a bright, spacious bedroom and bathroom, it really is something to think about. It allows light to flood into each room, while creating a feel of spaciousness and a luxury hotel-vibe.

Master Bathroom Case Study

If you're sold - or even slightly coming around to the idea - then read on for the case study...

Approximately 5 sq. m. in size, the couple's bathroom had started to become dated, with limescale forming between the mosaic wall tiles and the small, square floor tiles. The pine furniture also lacked life, and they knew the generous space had plenty of life waiting to be unlocked.

Favouring the bath over the shower, they decided that the majority of the layout would be dictated by the position of the bath. They wanted it to sit equally between the bathroom and the bedroom, creating the relaxing feeling of being in a high-end hotel, while being able to gaze out into the countryside while they were laid in the tub. They chose the Elsa 1755mm freestanding bath.

Conscious about dirt falling behind the back of the freestanding bath, they also decided to go for a straight-edged bath which they could prop up against a tile upstand, to leave no gap between the bath and the windows.

The remaining layout flowed from there. The limited wall space - due to the bathroom sitting within a sloped roof - meant that they had to get a little creative. Our Surrey bathroom store team visited them and came up with a solution.

One of the walls was earmarked for a shower, while the other was taken up by the bath and the toilet, leaving little space for the vanity unit. The resulting fix was to build out the wall underneath the sloping roof's Velux window, creating a third wall for the sink to sit. It also formed enough space to add shelving.

Choosing The Products

The bedroom itself was a mixture of styles, incorporating modern, fitted wardrobes, alongside an original feature fireplace. The bathroom therefore needed to mirror this mixed classic and contemporary theme.

They went for muted tones, choosing our large-format Jupiter Gris porcelain tiles for the floors and the unique effect of the Jupiter Gris Decor tiles - complete with a hexagonal split-face - for the feature wall within the shower.

Continuing the theme of soft colours, they also chose a simple, grey vanity unit, to create a timeless look and finish, which could regularly be updated with fresh, colourful accessories. The look was achieved using our Ellis 600mm wall-hung unit in charcoal.

Finishing off the bathroom, the new false wall surrounding the vanity unit was cladded in an authentic timber, to tie into the wooden beams within the bedroom.

The whole space has been completed with modern accessories, including stainless steel candle holders, matte black shower accessories and pink vases – giving it that high-end hotel look they were looking for.

This increasingly popular style of bathroom is a new style of living which we think will be seen in more and more homes over the next few years.
