Six Tips for a More Relaxing Christmas

Us British folk love Christmas. In fact, a recent report from Google indicates that people in Britain make more searches about Christmas than any other country in the world.
Perhaps it’s because we love the idea of spending quality time celebrating with family and friends. But no matter how much planning and organisation goes into the Christmas period, it can still be a stressful time, especially if you’re the host.
So we’ve put together some tips to help you relax over Christmas. Here they are:
1.Don’t overthink it
First things first, it’s important not to become your own worst enemy. If you set too high expectations, you’re likely to feel overwhelmed.
No one will really be that bothered if your Yorkshire puddings come out flat or your bathroom isn’t spick and span, so don’t sweat the small stuff.
2. Practice meditation
If you feel the anger rising inside you, take some time to focus on the task at hand. Whether you’re chopping carrots, having a brew or setting the table, try to clear your mind and zone everything else out.
Breathe deeply through your nose, hold for 10 seconds and breathe out for 10 seconds through your mouth. This will lower your heart beat and help to relax you.
3. Burn some candles
Candles are known for having stress-busting qualities — we think it’s the combination of the flame and the soothing smells. Set some around the home for a calming environment.
4. Take time out
Christmas is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t burn yourself out by trying to be the host-with-the-most all day long.
Taking even 15 minutes away from the screaming kids or demanding grandparents can help to press the reset button.
5. Take the dog on a walk
Exercise is a great way to enhance your mood and reduce stress, and Fido will thank you for it. Even being around dogs — who are assuringly happy all the time — can help you to leave everything else behind. It could also become a nice Christmas tradition.
6. Run a bath
There’s nothing more soothing than a hot bath, surrounded by candles. Pour in your favourite essential oils, stick Netflix on if you fancy it and have a glass of wine within close reach.
We hope these six tips help you to enjoy Christmas. After all, it is the most wonderful time of the year!
