5 Bathroom Ceiling Lighting Ideas

Deciding on your bathroom lighting can be confusing. There’s recessed lights, flush lights, pendant lights. Or do you choose the chandelier you’ve fallen in love with but think might be a little too extra?

There are tons of options out there, and it’s tricky to know which is the right choice. So before you end up with a single bulb hanging down from the ceiling because you couldn’t decide, we’re stepping in to help!

Below, you can find a whole load of bathroom ceiling lighting ideas that will inspire you to finally make your choice.

How To Choose A Bathroom Ceiling Light

The options are almost endless, but you want a bathroom ceiling light that reflects (and complements) your other design choices, something that can offer both softness and brightness depending on what you’re up to. The balance can be tricky, but that’s why we’re here to help.

First, think about the size and layout of your bathroom. A single central light might be enough for a small bathroom, but in a larger space, it will only leave you with annoying shadows (particularly around the mirror), and it can look a little harsh.

It’s usually a better design choice to bounce softer lighting around the room with multiple ceiling fittings, as well as wall lights.

Then, consider your ceiling height. This is usually overlooked but is an important thing to consider as it tells you whether you need flush-mount or recessed lights vs. a pendant.

If your ceilings are low, flush-mount or recessed lights are your best bet, as anything that hangs down can make the room feel more cramped. If you’ve got higher ceilings, you’ve got a bit more freedom to go for statement pieces like pendants or even a small chandelier.

You’ll also want to think about what you actually use your bathroom for. If it’s a busy family bathroom, bright, even lighting is essential so you can see what you’re doing during the morning rush. If it’s more of a relaxing, spa-like space, softer lighting is a winner. Ideally, your ceiling lighting will work alongside other lights, like mirror or wall lights, rather than trying to do everything on its own.

Another big factor is light direction and coverage. Some ceiling lights are more directional (like spotlights), while others diffuse light across the whole room. If you’ve got darker corners or awkward layouts, directional lighting can help you target specific areas, whereas diffused lighting is better for general brightness.

Then, of course, we can’t forget about style and finish. One of the most important considerations, your ceiling light should tie in with the design of the bathroom, whether it’s modern, traditional, minimalist, maximalist or something else entirely.

Finally, there’s safety. Bathrooms have strict regulations when it comes to lighting, particularly around water zones. Make sure any ceiling light you choose has the correct IP rating for where it’s going, and if you’re unsure, it’s always worth double-checking with a qualified electrician.

Recessed/Downlights

Recessed bathroom lighting is still one of the most popular choices, and we can understand why. These downlights sit in the ceiling so they don’t take up lots of space (ideal in a smaller bathroom or one with a lower ceiling). There are so many variants to choose from, whether you want silver ones, gold ones, black ones, white ones and any colour in between.

They’re great for evenly distributing light across the room, especially when placed strategically around key areas like the shower, bath, and vanity. While some people find them to be a little too bright and direct, you can install a dimmer switch so that you can soften the lighting when needed.

Smart Colour-Changing Lights

Who says you can only choose one bulb colour?

A bathroom is used for a whole range of tasks, from brushing your teeth and finishing your makeup to perfecting your skincare routine and enjoying a relaxing bath. Each task may require a different type of light, which is why a colour-changing bathroom light is a game changer. Switch between warm white and cool white, or go for something completely different that takes your fancy, like red, blue, or green.

Flush-Mount Ceiling Lights

Flush-mount lights sit directly against the ceiling, making them ideal for bathrooms with lower ceiling heights. They’re a little more decorative than recessed lighting if you’re looking to add some interest and personality to your bathroom, but they’re still really practical for every-day use.

You’ll find loads of styles to choose from, including simple frosted glass domes, brushed gold or silver discs and modern crystal spheres.

Pendant And Statement Bathroom Lights

If your bathroom ceiling is a little higher, you can have some more fun with the bathroom light design and choose a beautiful pendant light. Hanging from the ceiling, they add a layer of visual interest that instantly makes your bathroom feel a little more luxe.

They work particularly well above a freestanding bath or in the centre of the room, creating a focal point that makes the space feel more like something from a boutique hotel.

Just keep in mind that your pendant or statement light should be installed away from water zones (like that of a shower).

Chandelier And Feature Lights

For something a little more luxurious, chandeliers or feature lights can bring a touch of drama to your bathroom. This style is best suited to larger bathrooms where you’ve got the space (and ceiling height) to let it shine.

Our five light crystal chandelier is a great example. Its beautiful ornate design adds some needed drama to your bathroom, while its five-LED bulbs give off plenty of light to show off the rest of the space.

If you want something a little more subtle, even a small modern chandelier can make a big impact.

Led Strip Lighting

LED strip lighting is one of the more subtle bathroom ceiling lighting ideas, but it can be incredibly effective. Rather than acting as your main light source, it’s used to create ambient lighting around ceiling edges or in recessed coving.

Strip lights give off a soft, diffused glow that instantly makes the space feel calmer and more inviting. They’re perfect for those relaxing evening baths, when an overhead light would ruin your vibe, or for getting ready to go out, offering lighting that is a little softer for when you’re applying your makeup.

You can even opt for colour-changing LEDs if you want to switch up the mood depending on the time of day.

Lighting Ideas For Small Bathrooms

Make The Ceiling Feel Higher With Recessed Lighting

The key is to draw the eye upwards to make a room feel bigger. This is why recessed lighting works so well, as it sits within the ceiling instead of hanging down into the room, which will only give the appearance of less space.

Instead, you want to create the illusion of height, which can be achieved by keeping the ceiling line clean and uncluttered. We’d also suggest that you space your downlights evenly to help spread the light more effectively, reducing shadows and making the room feel more open and airy.

Layer Your Lighting To Create Depth

Layering is important in many aspects of interior design: stacking up knick knacks, adding cushions and throws to a sofa. The theory can also be applied to your bathroom lighting.

Instead of relying on a single ceiling light, which can appear a bit harsh, combine multiple light sources to help add depth and dimension.

For example, pair your ceiling lighting with wall lights or an illuminated mirror. This helps to eliminate dark corners while also creating a more balanced, flattering glow throughout the space.

Bounce Light Off Surfaces

When it comes to adding light to a small bathroom, many people forget that it’s not just about the light itself. It’s about how it interacts with other aspects of the room and how it bounces off other surfaces.

What materials do you have in your bathroom that could reflect light? It might be some glossy floor tiles, mirrors, lighter colour palettes and even a glass shower screen.

Position your ceiling lights so they enhance these reflections rather than work against them. It’s a simple trick, but it can completely change how your bathroom feels.

What Should You Know Before You Buy Bathroom Lights?

Before you rush into buying something, there are a few practical aspects to keep in mind.

First up: IP ratings. Bathrooms are damp environments so your lighting needs to be able to handle moisture and steam. Different areas of the bathroom are split into zones (0, 1, and 2), each with its own requirements. For example, lights in or very near the shower will need a higher IP rating than those further away. Most lighting manufacturers will show the IP rating on the packaging or online if you’re unsure.

Bulb colour is another big one. Cool white light is great for tasks like shaving or applying makeup, while warm white creates a softer, more relaxing atmosphere. Many people opt for a mix or go for adjustable bulbs to get the best of both worlds.

Finally, think about switch placement. For safety reasons, switches need to be positioned outside of wet zones, typically at least 0.6 metres away from a bath or shower. This is why you’ll often see pull cords or switches placed just outside the bathroom door.

If you’re still weighing up options, it’s worth browsing a few styles online or checking out more bathroom design ideas to see how different designs work in real homes. A bit of inspiration goes a long way when it comes to getting your lighting just right.
