Radiator Buying Guide

What to consider when choosing a radiator

Heat Output - How do I choose what size radiator I need?

This is the most important consideration when shopping for your new radiator, the heat output determines how effective your new radiator will be at warming up the room. The heat output is measured in watts or BTU (1 watt is about 3.412 BTU/h), if the output is too low the room will not get warm enough, and if it is too high you may spend more on the radiator than necessary.

There are several contributing factors to the output you need including the room size, room type, insulation and glazing, external wall and aspect, ceiling height and if it will be used for towels. We recommend speaking to our showroom team to assist you in working out the best BTU for your space.

Position

You will need to consider several factors when selecting the position for your radiator as this can affect how well a radiator heats the room, how easy it is to use and to maintain, and how safe and practical it is to install. Considerations include:

Heat Circulation

  • Traditionally radiators are placed under the window. The warm air rising from the radiator combats the draught from the windows, which is especially prominent in older windows with single glazing.

  • Heat needs to circulate freely, so the radiator needs to be positioned with plenty of space rather than boxed in.

  • Ensure curtains stop above your radiator to avoid trapping heat and reducing the efficiency of warming the room.

Clearance and Fixing

  • It is recommended to leave space above the radiator for airflow, and below to allow efficient circulation.

  • When fixing your new radiator, ensure the wall can carry the weight. Traditional radiators can be extremely heavy, especially when filled with water, so it is best to ensure your wall can withstand the new radiator.

  • Consider the positioning of your current pipework and ensure your new radiator will fit within the space, if you choose to reroute your pipework this can be a costly process for installation.

Layout

  • Ensure the radiator will not be knocked or in the way of doors and windows, as constant trauma to your radiator can cause the condition to deteriorate prematurely and cause a safety concern.

  • Free up floor space by opting for a vertical radiator, which are well suited to narrow walls, alcoves and bathrooms to create a larger feel to the space.

Bathroom Specific Considerations

  • Towel access should be considered when installing your new towel rail. A heated towel rail should be within easy reach of the bath or shower.

  • When installing an electric radiator in the bathroom, strict guidelines must be followed as UK bathrooms are divided into zones. The position must comply with the rules for each zone and have a suitable IP rating. Our accredited installation team will ensure your new radiator is positioned correctly within your bathroom.

  • Where possible, keep bathroom radiators away from direct water spray, and select a moisture resistant finish if they will be closely positioned to the bath or shower.

Heating Type

This is usually the first consideration when purchasing your new radiator, as the heating type determines the installation and running costs. There are three main options available:

  • Central heating (hot water) which connects to your existing boiler or heat pump system. When the heating is on it heats up with the rest of your home, and is usually the most cost effective method of heating. This method requires connecting to pipework and the current system needs to have enough capacity.

  • Electric radiators work independently from your boiler, so they are well suited to extensions, conservatories, temporary heating spaces or bathrooms without pipework. Installation for electric systems is generally easier, but must be hard wired by a qualified electrician and have a suitable IP rating.

  • Dual fuel is a dynamic option for the modern home, combining central heating and electric elements. This means your towel rail can be turned on independently in the summer when the whole system isn’t running.

Finish

The finish of your radiator affects how it will look, how it copes with any moisture and how much maintenance it needs. Although it doesn’t affect the heat output, it is important to consider for style and durability.

Which type of radiator is right for my bathroom?

There are several types of radiator to consider, with different styles and functions to suit your individual needs.

Vertical Radiator

Ideal for compact bathrooms, vertical radiators sit well in narrow spaces besides the bath, shower or door, allowing more floor and wall space for other bathroom furniture.

Heated Towel Rail

A heated towel rail is a classic choice for a bathroom, combining functionality and aesthetics to create a warm stylish space that can also dry your towels!

Column Radiator

Column radiators are well suited to traditional, period homes with their industrial, polished look. Holding heat well, column radiators help to keep the bathroom at a steady and comfortable temperature.

Designer Radiator

Make every element of your bathroom interior aesthetically pleasing with a designer radiator! Featuring contemporary elements such as curves, mirrored panels or abstract design, designer radiators are ideal for introducing personality to the interior.

Traditional Radiator

Timeless design is a versatile option in the bathroom and traditional radiators fit perfectly within this specification. Offering classic details and a timeless profile, traditional radiators are a reliable, long lasting design choice.

Electric Radiator

Working independently to your heating system, this can be an efficient way to ensure your bathroom is comfortable when the heating isn’t on. Electric radiators must be hard wired by a qualified electrician and have a suitable IP rating for their zone in the bathroom.

Vertical or Horizontal Radiators?

Vertical and Horizontal radiators are both popular choices for the home, and often the deciding factor is personal preference and style. Things to consider when choosing between the two:

Heat Output

Horizontal radiators generally give out a higher output for their overall size, as more of the radiator sits at furniture height where the heat is needed. Vertical radiators can often match this, but it may be worth comparing the BTU to ensure you’re getting the best output.

Space

Vertical radiators are well suited to narrow spaces, and are often used in small bathrooms to allow for extra floor and wall space. Horizontal radiators are best for wider walls and work best under windows to counter any cold draughts from the glass.

Style

For contemporary homes, vertical radiators introduce a modern feel to the space, whilst horizontal radiators tend to suit period and traditional designs better.

Room Type

For bathrooms vertical radiators are the most popular choice where wall space is tight. They also work well in hallways and stairwells where space can be narrow. For living rooms and bedrooms, horizontal radiators work well as they are often placed under the window.

Traditional Towel Rail vs Heated Towel Rail

The terms are often used interchangeably, however there are some distinctions to note when shopping for your new bathroom radiator including primary purpose and design.

Heated Towel Rail

The primary purpose of a heated towel rail is to warm and dry towels, with the heating of the room being a secondary benefit. They are often designed with horizontal bars with spacing that allows towels to hang over in a ladder style. Heated towel rails often have a lower heat output as the bars have less surface area than traditional panels or columns, and are best for small bathrooms, en suites and cloakrooms.

Traditional Towel Rail Radiator

The main function of a traditional towel rail radiator is to heat the room, with towel hanging as a secondary feature. Traditional towel rails look closer to a standard radiator, with panels or columns but with a rail or bar section so towels can also hang from it. The output of a traditional towel rail is often higher, and they are better suited to larger bathrooms or rooms where meaningful heat output is required.

FAQs

Do I need a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV)?

A TRV allows you to control the temperature of each individual radiator, giving more control for busy and quiet areas of the house. Thermostatic radiator valves are a practical, cost effective function for your radiators in the home. Bathroom radiators tend to use a manual valve alongside a timer, as TRV’s can be affected by steam and humidity.

How do I bleed a radiator?

If your radiator is cold at the top but warm at the bottom, it is usually caused by trapped air and may need bleeding. It is imperative radiator bleeding is performed while the heating system is off, and the radiator is cold. To bleed your radiator, use a radiator key to slowly open the bleed valve at the top. Allow the air to escape until water starts to flow, then close the valve. Ensure the system is fully cold, and have a cloth ready to catch any drops, you may need to check the system pressure afterwards and top up if necessary. This action should only be performed if you are confident to do so, a heating specialist is recommended.
